Eggs, milk, butter, and flour. That’s all you need to celebrate a quirky Christian holiday – Pancake day! Also known as Shrove Tuesday, Pancake day marks the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. According to tradition, you are supposed to indulge in rich, fatty foods before the 40 days of fasting begins. Then, during the fasting period, you give up a favourite food or activity to practise self-restraint and make time for self-reflection.
Most of our students had never heard of Pancake day, and were reluctant to give up anything for Lent. However, they did jump at the opportunity to make pancakes at college!
To build teamwork, students had to first look up pancake recipes in small groups and collect their ingredients. Each group had its own portable hob to use. After a few trial runs, the students held competitions – one to judge how good their flips were, one to judge pancake aesthetics, and one to judge pancake taste. Lastly, they tried wacky ways to flip pancakes, even spinning and flipping their pancake to a partner and back.
Not only was it a fun and tasty lesson, the students got a chance to learn about a British tradition and practise working in a team.
If only learning could always be this delicious!
